Life as a solicitor can be an exhausting one full of dense dialogue and analysis, as well as one of privacy and concealment. While the law facilitates and dictates the conduct of life, it neither nurtures nor replenishes the soul, and its confines are alienating. This world is a fairly different one than the environment Davis Cremar, in 1964, was born into: the diverse, ever mutating and highly cordial city of Toronto. Being entrenched in the middle of Canada’s richest mosaic, Davis grew with an understanding of its various cultures, ethnicities, social sects and institutions. With empathetic consideration and the application of his skills as a Lawyer, Davis developed repute amongst individuals in the artistic community, helping to mediate between them and the various factions of the city. An experienced and professional musician as well, Davis had always maintained a creative output, but his more recent statements demanded to exist in the visual realm. Having absorbed the exchange of ideas surrounding him, and deciding on a medium, photography, Davis desired to tackle the issues that plague urbanism, portray the living city, and reflect the shared interests and concerns of his fellow inhabitants. The city provides the syntax and backdrop for many of his works, creating a dialogue between the traditional and the modern, the familiar and the unknown, and our memories and losses. A discussion the artist hopes resonates and contributes to the open exchange between us all and our surrounds. With an artistic practice, Davis also hopes to remove the veil of secrecy that has come to swathe aspects of his being, and live free of constraints. |
